REPORT NARRATIVE:

The Morgan Hill Community Foundation (MHCF) is a tax-exempt public charity focused on addressing community needs and identifying and acquiring resources that provide support to nonprofit groups and programs within the Morgan Hill School District boundaries.  The MHCF is committed to enriching the quality of life for the greater Morgan Hill area residents by awarding discretionary grants to charitable organizations that support valuable programs and activities.

Each year the MHCF holds a Philanthropy Day Event honoring community volunteers, community organizations and philanthropists.  For the last several years the City has supported this event by waiving room rental fees for use of the Community Center.  The MHCF Board has requested that the City continue to offer the use of the Community and Cultural Center for the Philanthropy Event at no cost to the MHCF.  The direct cost of a building coordinator and the required security guards would still be paid by the MHCF.  As part of the agreement, the MHCF would provide YAC with a table for 8 guests, including the YAC honoree, for no cost. Additionally, the City of Morgan Hill would be recognized as a sponsor in all materials marketing and advertising the event.

The Philanthropy Event recognizes the importance of community involvement and volunteerism in Morgan Hill.  Staff recommends that Council sponsor this important community celebration by directing the City Manager to waive the rental fee for use of the Community and Cultural Center.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:                     Collaborate

This request is an opportunity to collaborate with a local non-profit that is committed to enriching the quality of life for the greater Morgan Hill area.  The event itself is an activity that supports and promotes community involvement, recognizing the efforts of community leaders.

ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS:

1.                     The Council could elect to not approve the requested sponsorship

2.                     The Council could elect to waive a portion of the rental fee for the requested sponsorship.

PRIOR CITY COUNCIL AND COMMISSION ACTIONS:

The Council last approved the sponsorship of the 2014 Morgan Hill Community Foundation’s Philanthropy Day Event at the February 5, 2014 meeting.

FISCAL AND RESOURCE IMPACT:

The fiscal impact is the loss of potential revenue for that evening. The value of this sponsorship is estimated to be $2,700.
