Title

PROPOSAL FOR BRONZE LOKI SCULPTURE

RECOMMENDATION

The Commission recommends approval of the Loki Bronze Sculpture to the City Council.

BODY

REPORT NARRATIVE:

The City has received a request for the City to accept the donation of a bronze sculpture of a horned owl to be located on the wildlife trail adjacent to the Centennial Recreation Center. The current Commission policy on public art provides for a committee of three members to make a recommendation. The Committee is to consist of a commissioner, City staff member and member of the public. On June 14, 2016 the Library, Culture and Arts Commission assigned Commissioner Bonnie Williams to serve on the sub-committee to review the proposed Loki Sculpture Public Art project. The City has designated Chris Ghione as the representative for City staff and it is recommended the Commission allow Teresa Stephenson to serve as the member of the Community at large. These three sub-committee members have reviewed the proposal and the attached updated proposal is recommended for full Library, Culture and Arts Commission review.

The Library Culture and Arts Commission is responsible to make recommendations on acceptance of public art to the City Council. The location of the art provides an appropriate context for the wildlife themed sculpture. The City working with the South County Masonic Lodge now has a coordinated art maintenance program. Training on the upkeep of bronze sculptures has been received by City staff and volunteers from the Masonic Lodge. Maintenance of the proposed small bronze sculpture would fit into the ongoing bronze maintenance performed by City staff and volunteers.

Should the Council approve acceptance of the sculpture, Teresa Stephenson would begin fundraising for the project.
